During his visit from 15 to 24 May 2012, Dorji will also take the opportunity  to travel to Cannes together with Henk de Jong, bhutan+partners. Dorji and Henk will speak with Dutch and European entrepreneurs interested in supporting the  Bhutan film industry .

Bhutan+partners connected PINC to Bhutan and Dorji Wangchuk and initiated an assessment of the Bhutan film industry in 2011 (Bhutan Film Industry 29-12-2011 ).

Dorji Wangchuk, engineer, filmmaker and journalist, will be one of the speakers at the PINC.13 conference on 22 May 2012 in Zeist, the Netherlands.

Dorji Wangchuk started his career as an electrotechnical engineer. He was one of the team that started  the Bhutan Broadcasting Services, first radio and TV in 1999. He started the first independent radio station, initiated and organized the Coronation and Centenary Celebrations in 2008 with friends, made documentaries and worked  as a journalist. HM the King of Bhutan appointed him director of the Royal Office of Media in 2009. Dorji is an active blogger and columnist.

Henriette Stroucken and Karma Pem Wangdi on behalf of the Royal Government of Bhutan, managed to create the ‘House of Happiness’ with sustainable materials.

The conference follows the adoption of the resolution ‘ Happiness: towards a holistic approach to development’ by the UN in 2011. The resolution was initiated by Bhutan where the 4th king introduced gross national happiness which became the  development policy of the Kingdom.

86 centimetres… the Bhutanese /Dutch documentary about the melting glacial lakes in Bhutan had it’s US premiere in Washington on 18 March at the National Museum of Natural History in the Capital.

The premiere was attended by 400 people. 86 centimetres… was screened with the documentary Bhutan: land of the black-necked crane. The spectators were impressed by the incredible works done by the Bhutanese men and women to lower the water level of the lake in order to prevent a disaster. The public was shocked to see that the work was done bare handed with no other tools than hammers, ropes and poles.

86 centimetres… follows Tashi, a young Bhutanese farmer who joined a group of 350 workers to work at lake Thorthormi, the lake most likely to cause a glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF) in Bhutan. Tashi and his mates worked three months at lake Thorthormi and widened an outlet manually, thus lowering the water level in the lake by 86 centimetres.

After the screenings Henk de Jong, producer and director bhutan+partners, Tshewang Wangchuk and Tshering Yangzom, both working with the Bhutan Foundation, joined the panel discussion which was moderated by Bruce Bunting, president of the Bhutan Foundation.

bhutan+partners assessed the film industry in bhutan in 2011.

Mr Ad Weststrate and Mr Henk de Jong visited Bhutan for the assessment of the Bhutan Film Industry from 5 to 11 July 2011.

Prior to the actual assessment in July 2011, Henk de Jong spoke to representatives of the film industry and the Royal Government of Bhutan in December 2010.  A desk study was conducted between January and June 2011.

Film professionals, entrepreneurs and representatives of the Royal Government of Bhutan were interviewed.

The assessment team was granted an audience with Lyonchhen Jigmi Y Thinley, the prime minister of Bhutan on 8 July 2011.

The research team wrote the final report on the present situation of the film industry in Bhutan and presents recommendations to further develop the industry. The report was reviewed by Mrs Barbara Adler, film expert Denmark with great knowledge of the film industry in Bhutan,  Kees Izeboud, director film festival Film by the Sea and Thukten Yeshi, film director  Bhutan.

The report was presented to Dorji Wangchuk, director Royal Office of Media and discussed in Bhutan in February 2012.
