Henk de Jong visits Bhutan

Henk de Jong, bhutan+partners, visits Bhutan from 24 June to 10 July. He will discuss developments of the sports program, support Ad Weststrate with the assessment of the film industry and discuss a proposal for sustainable building project with Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba among others.
Henk went to Chang jiji youth centre upon arrival in Thimphu and spoke with the youth workers team: Karma, Lham and Sonam.
He met with the delegation at  the blue economy conference and spoke with Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba and Maarten Desmet about sustainable building and a project proposal which bhutan and partners intitaiate together with Chiel Boonstra and Maarten Desmet.

Bhutan and water

Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba, Minister of Works and Human Settlement in Bhutan explains in a skype  interview with Mark Charmer for UN Water World Day, 21 March 2011, the necessity of water policies and actions. New actions are needed to ensure water supply to Bhutanese citizen, 50% of whom will be residing in urban areas by 2020. Water for Bhutanese citizens living in the capital Thimphu has already become troublesome in certain areas. It is expected that  climate change will soon reduce the amount of water delivered by the glacial lakes in the Himalayans. This will affect the water level in the rivers used for hydropower, irrigation, construction and drinking water.

While water has always been available throughout the country this may change soon especially in the vast growing urban areas of Bhutan.

Bhutan happiness – samsam

Samsam, the Dutch magazine for primary school children in the Netherlands, April 2011 is entirely about Bhutanese children and happiness. Film material and assignments are included in the interactive website of samsam. Samsam is published by NCDO.
